about
I spent the majority of 2014 working at an amazing hospice in the South as a music therapist. Every conversation and song about death is different. This song was born out of my processing of some of those bittersweet conversations about death where fear met love and even joy for what was to come. The lyrics are primarily words that were spoken to me- words that stayed with me so long I needed to give them a voice.
lyrics
bury me in my overalls
with a banjo player a'pickin his songs
tell my wife and my daughers i'll be up there
ploughin them fields of gold
a man ought to be
a few simple things
a lover and a worker and a prayin on his knees
I broke my back in them there fields till I was gray
prayed to my Lord above for one more blessed day
so
bury me in my overalls
with a banjo player a'pickin his songs
tell my wife and my daughers i'll be up there
ploughin them fields of gold
oh heed, heed, heed,
heed the lovin' call of my savior true
the one up yonder, ya'll
don't stick no tubes in me
sooner I die sooner I see Jesus at the gates
a woman ought to be
a few simple things
but she ain't and she'll never be and that's the blessed game
but mine was the only one who ever felt just right
and she stayed right here by my side when I got old and tired
so
bury me in my overalls
with a banjo player a'pickin his songs
tell my wife and my daughers i'll be up there
ploughin them fields of gold
oh heed, heed, heed,
heed the lovin' call of my savior true
the one up yonder, ya'll
don't stick no tubes in me
sooner I die sooner I see Jesus at the gates
